How difficult is it to remove a hedge?
Hedge removal requires a great deal of digging to a depth that’s dictated by the size and species of your hedge. You can use a shovel, a spade, a fork and a crowbar to aid you. You may even require a mechanical digger if the job is particularly arduous. Hedge removal should be conducted right down to the roots.
Can I remove my own hedge?
You are allowed to trim or maintain your side of the hedge to the boundary in this instance as long as that doesn’t kill the hedge, but it is considered to be shared property, so you’ll need to come to an agreement with your neighbour in order to remove it legally.
How deep are roots on hedges?
You’ll need to dig a planting trench at least 45cm (1.5 foot) wide and 30cm (1 foot) deep (deeper for more established plants to accommodate their larger root systems) where you intend to plant your new hedge. Break up any remaining compaction, especially in the base and sides of the hole.

How much can you take off a hedge?

What is the by-law on displaying my permit?
The by-law requires that all distinctive tree permits are posted on the property for 7 days prior to removal and 7 days following the removal. Notice of the permit must also be posted on the tree itself for 7 days prior to removal. Call 3-1-1 and ask if a tree permit has been issued for the address.
Can I get a free tree from City of Ottawa?
Street trees are available by request on a first come, first served basis. If your City-owned street frontage lacks a tree and you have the time and commitment to help care for one, please contact us. There will be no charge to the homeowner (supply and planting will be provided by the City).

Can i keep my wood for firewood?
Sure- just remember to tell us that you want the tree kept for firewood before we start the job. We’ll even pile it neatly for you! Just a tip: oak and hickory work well in a stove, whereas pine and spruce work best for fireplaces and fire pits.
